Adopt-A-Grave Program & Newsletter - IOOF Cemetery in Sonora
The "Adopt a Grave" program is a volunteer effort to help restore the IOOF Cemetery in Sonora. A person or group can adopt a gravesite. There is no limit to the number of graves a person may adopt, nor how many people may be involved in one adoption. Each Adoption comes with a "Adoption Certificate" and a picture of the gravesite and the location. Adopting a grave is a promise to visit the gravesite periodically and take care of it. In doing so, you will also help improve the appearance of our Cemetery located at 115 Lytton Street in Sonora.
If you are unable to adopt a grave any donation is greatly appreciated and will go into our cemetery fund for the purpose of resetting stones, materials, and treatments, in addition to overall preservation.
As a contributer of the Find A Grave Program I have visited many cemeteries in the Gold Country in search of
the final disposition of family, friends, and 'famous' individuals to photograph and upload onto Find A Grave. I have also taken pictures of the entrances to these cemeteries and provided street addresses.
This website was created to share pieces of history from the California Gold Country.
The site includes the Tuolumne County Cemeteries and Calaveras County Cemeteries that date back to the mid 1800s. You will find Historic and forgotten towns, names that never made the history books and much more.
"A Glimpse into the Past" is a work in progress".
